Why do Cryogenic Valves have long stems?

Cryogenic valves used in applications involving liquid natural gas(LNG), methane, oxygen, ammonia, and others are mostly designed with extended bonnets.

1. Ensuring Higher Temperature for Valve Stem Seals:

By having extended bonnets, the valve stem seals are kept away from the extremely cold sources in cryogenic environments, preventing them from becoming too cold and losing their effectiveness.

2. Providing Space for Insulation:

The extended bonnet design also provides sufficient space between the pipeline and the lever/handwheel used to operate the valve, which further helps in keeping the valve stem and actuator at a reasonable temperature. Insulation plays a crucial role in reducing heat loss, preventing freezing, and ensuring smooth valve operation even in extremely low-temperature conditions.
